In a nutshell

Working as part of Virgin Atlantic’s Corporate Project Management practice on some of the airline’s biggest cross-functional projects, you’ll be responsible for the successful delivery of projects to time, cost and quality. Our portfolio includes aircraft entry into service programmes, new commercial propositions and business efficiency initiatives.

You’ll work closely and collaboratively with business owners up to EVP / SVP level to provide a high quality project management service, demonstrating exceptional planning techniques, facilitation and problem solving skills. We’ll also expect you to have excellent communication and the ability to influence and manage across functional boundaries to deliver complex business change projects.

Day to day

Facilitate the definition of project scope, goals and deliverables for sizeable projects ensuring these are agreed with stakeholders and sponsor. This should include the definition of work streams and work breakdown structures.

Establish the overall project structure, governance and define the roles and responsibilities for all project resources and stakeholders.

Working with Finance and collaborating with the project team and external suppliers to prepare the project business case, where appropriate presenting these for approval.

Identify key stakeholders at the start of the project lifecycle and create a stakeholder management plan which identifies how to engage the relevant parties

Engage the relevant teams across Virgin Atlantic (and where applicable Delta) at the start of the project, ensuring they are clear of expectations and their role to play within the project.

Working with the project team to develop robust, where appropriate detailed plans, for the project activity (using a delivery-based approach) and ensure that the project’s critical path is identified and clearly communicated.

Identify the key dependencies within the project and across its constituent work-streams, so that these are clearly shown within the overall project plans.

Identify project risks and agree/manage risk management plans, escalating where appropriate.

Facilitate project, steering and working group meetings to enable project delivery. Steering a stakeholder groups will typically include VP, SVP and EVP audiences.

Manage the project finances and monitor spend against the approved project budget on a monthly basis; showing actual, committed and forecasts to completion.

Take an active part in the development of the Portfolio Management practice in order to develop the community and effectiveness of delivery in line with business requirements.

Active sharing of knowledge and experience to coach and support other project managers and drive best practice.

About you

To be successful in this role, you will have demonstrable experience in the delivery of work to time, cost and quality objectives along with experience of working effectively with a wide variety of departments and people at all levels within an organisation. It is essential that you have project management qualifications and programme manager qualifications would be advantageous. Knowledge of project management techniques and tools (including JIRA and Smart sheet) would also be beneficial.

You will be methodical, meticulous and organised with a flexible approach to work with a focus on striving to delivery and exceeding customer expectations. Strong communication, presentation and interpersonal skills are also essential for this position as will be regularly chairing meetings and giving presentations to senior audiences. You’ll need the ability to cope with pressure and support extended working hours at peak times.
