In a nutshell

This is a fantastic opportunity for someone to join the business as the Head of Safety. You will be fully responsible for developing and implementing a strategy that delivers to the highest standards of Safety, through effective identification and control of all Safety risks across the business. 

You will have saftey oversight across all VAA (Virgin Atlantic) operational departments, ensuring that the strategy will provide continuous improvement and compliance with all relevant Safety regulations and legislation. This will be an opportunity for you to shape, influence and instil a positive open culture through the VAA Safety Management System.

As the Head of Safety, you will drive all communication to internal and external stakeholders and be expected to report to leadership on current compliance and safety updates. This role is integral to providing a safe and compliant operation for the business.


Day to day

Provision of strategic advice to the Safety & Security Review Board, Chief Executive Officer, Director of Aircraft Operations (accountable Manager) and Director of Service Delivery on safety, security, compliance and operational risk

Provision of Risk Management workshop facilitation as required
Continuous development of an effective risk management framework tool for management to assess, plan and manage their safety and security risks
Preparation of Safety & Security Review Board reports
Analysis and review of significant risk
Management of Safety investigation, ensuring compliance and continuous improvement.
Management of post incident review and stakeholder actions and learning
Continually challenge/ develop/coach and support managers on a wide range of leadership activities (lead by example)
Lead, direct, motivate and develop your team to ensure that the agreed standards of performance and contribution are successfully achieved
Lead and project manage key project initiatives through direct reports
Drive a proactive change management culture
Assist in the justification, development and implementation of improvement activities and productivity improvements. 
Develop and implement key departmental and divisional performance dashboards to link performance to business objectives.  

Support development and responsibility of annual divisional budgets 


About you

As the Head of Safety you will have a good knowledge of all Civil Aviation Authority, European Aviation Safety Agency and other National Airworthiness Authority Regulations. You will have a track record of Strategy and delivering change, Project Management and implementation, within Aviation safety management specifically. You will have strong business acumen and the resilience to deal with complex issues whilst critically identifying strategic business opportunities.

You’ll be responsible for creating and delivering key business information via various formats, to senior members of the business. You will be commercially aware and will have the ability to interpret key political messages, using the information to make decisions when dealing with suppliers or internal stakeholders. This role will also be accountable for compiling reports that go to VAA management and 3rd party providers and presenting your findings.

As a driver of Safety strategy, using your extensive operational experience, you will be a strong communicator, influencer and decision maker.
