In a nutshell

In this role you'll establish, operate and control the financial accounting processes of the Group. This role must deliver accurate, reliable and timely books of account for the VAL Group and its subsidiary undertakings. You will also oversee the operation of core general accounting activities and deliver statutory and regulatory compliant reporting requirements. 

As the Accountant - Financial Reporting you will be part of a team of 4 reporting into the Head of Group Financial Reporting & Technical Compliance. You will be responsible for delivering high quality technical accounting expertise for the FA&C department as well the wider finance function. The role includes reporting (to both internal and external parties) of the statutory result and position for all entities (on a standalone and consolidated basis) within the VAL Group as well as being the central accounting point of contact for Virgin Management and Delta finance teams. You will own the consolidation process at both at all levels. You will be responsible for project managing key external reporting activities associated with the statutory audit as well as the preparation of financial statements for all entities within the Group. 

Day to day

Technical guidance

Provide guidance and thought leadership via accounting reference documentation, on all aspects of IFRS including new standards, IFRS 15 and 16 through transition and beyond.
Design and maintenance of suitable Group accounting policies, conventions and procedures.
Group reporting
Operate a robust balance sheet account management process to underpin delivery of accurate book-keeping.
Deliver timely and robust intercompany and consolidation (including sub consolidation) accounting processes.
Deliver timely, robust and appropriately controlled Group closing, analysis and reporting and reconciliation processes.
Deliver timely and accurate Group accounts to meet all statutory, regulatory, shareholder and management reporting requirements.
Coordinate and deliver the external audit process to successful and efficient conclusion.
Deliver timely and informative balance sheet and cash flow analysis to support financial decision making.
Ensure that all reporting requirements to third parties are satisfied.
Ownership of Group reporting systems
Thorough exploitation and development of financial systems to ensure the operation of accurate, efficient, timely and robust interfaces between the core financial systems.
Ensure consistency in operation, process and control across all Group locations and drive process efficiency for Group reporting.
People development
Share accounting skills with the wider team in support of our shared Finance objective of being a world class Centre of Excellence for IFRS Accounting. 

About you

To be successful in this role, you will be degree educated (or equivalent) with a qualification in ACA/ACCA as well as a deep knowledge of both IFRS and FRS102 accounting standards and the ability to articulate technical accounting subject matter to influence the decision making of senior management. You will possess a strong appreciation of management accounting and financial systems,  preferably Oracle financials and the skill to implement new systems and accounting processes into the Group reporting space.

You'll have an ability to dissect, redesign and implement process change as well as experience in risk assessment and design of appropriate, proportionate controls is essential. You'll also require an ability to drive efficiencies, identify weak processes and controls for improvement as well as a proven capability to prioritise work, working under pressure and delivering to tight deadlines.  

Your resilient personality and the ability to self-motivate as well as having a positive and pragmatic approach to achieving results will be vital and you'll need great attention to detail and pursuit of accuracy.  You'll also need strong influencing/interpersonal capability, especially with senior teams to challenge and drive sound accounting decisions.  Strong MS Office skills are also essential.
